About Us
Welcome to the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Essex. The Department of Mathematics was one of the first to be established when the University began in 1964 (indeed Prof John Dowden was the first student of the university). It is a small and friendly department, and we take great pride in our excellent staff-student relations. The department teaches undergraduate courses in Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, Statistics, and Operational Research, as well as specialist courses for Computer Science and Electronic Systems Engineering. All these topics play a part in courses taught at the University of Essex. At postgraduate level, the department has a long history of providing taught courses and supervising projects for advanced research degrees. If you are interested in studying mathematics at Essex why not take a look at the guide to undergraduate admissions or the guide to postgraduate admissions.
